Three Popular Biomedical Autism BooksBooks by Dr. Kenneth Bock, Sally Kirk, & Jenny McCarthy are Featured
The biomedical approach to treating autism spectrum disorders may be confusing but these three books help parents to better understand these treatments.
Autism spectrum disorders are increasing in prevalence. As the number of children diagnosed with autism goes up, it appears that the popularity of biomedical interventions to treat autism and autism-like symptoms rises as well. Biomedical approaches to treating autism are varied and may include dietary interventions, vitamin supplementation, the use of enzymes, and much more. However, the world of biomedical intervention can be confusing, especially to the parents of a child newly diagnosed with autism. Parents interested in exploring a biomedical approach to autism will find the following three books helpful. Healing the New Childhood Epidemics by Kenneth Bock, MD and Cameron Stauth Published in April 2008, Healing the New Childhood Epidemics: Autism, ADHD, Asthma, and Allergies: The Groundbreaking Program for the 4-A Disorders quickly became a must-have book for any parent or professional interested in the complex world of biomedical interventions. The book takes the confusing world of biomedical treatments and explains it in a way that parents can understand. Not only are parents able to gain a better understanding of the biomedical world, they are often left feeling more hopeful about their child’s future after reading Healing the New Childhood Epidemics. Hope for the Autism Spectrum by Sally Kirk Unlike Healing the New Childhood Epidemics, the author of Hope for the Autism Spectrum: A Mother and Son Journey of Insight and Biomedical Intervention is the first-hand account of one mother’s journey down the road of biomedical interventions to help her son. Many parents may feel isolated upon hearing the words, “your child has autism.” Kirk shares her journey with a familiar voice and readers may quickly feel a kinship with the author. Mother Warriors by Jenny McCarthy Published in March 2009 as a follow-up to her bestselling book Louder Than Words: A Mother’s Journey in Healing Autism, Mother Warriors: A Nation of Parents Healing Autism Against All Odds presents several parents’ journeys to heal their children through a variety of interventions. McCarthy is the mother of a child on the autism spectrum and founded the Generation Rescue organization with Jim Carrey. She has made numerous television appearances to discuss autism and has been a vocal advocate of the efficacy of the biomedical interventions used with her son. Although the many different aspects of biomedical interventions for autism are confusing at first, parents that read these three books will quickly find themselves understanding more about the various treatment options available. It is important to note that the treatment options will vary, sometimes greatly, among individuals on the autism spectrum. Although readers of these books will gain a better understanding of the biomedical world, it is important that parents work with a licensed and knowledgeable physician prior to starting any new treatment.
