Heavy metal detoxification has become a widespread method of treatment for autism. Detoxification helps remove mercury and other disease-causing metals from the body.
Autism, a pervasive developmental disorder characterized by severe deficits in social interaction and communication, is associated with a restricted range of activities and interests, as well as stereotyped repetitive behaviors such as lining up toys in a certain way or requiring basic routines. The theory behind detoxification is that heavy metals have accumulated in the child and that removal of these heavy metals (and other toxins) will improve symptoms. Some parents have reported that the effects of detoxification are as dramatic as those found with secretin. The first step is often testing to determine if heavy metals are present. Typically, a 24 hour urine sample is obtained for heavy metals and then a dose of DMSA is given and the 24 hour urine is repeated. If heavy metals are present, they should increase when a chelating agent is given. Typical treatments include the administration of DMSA, 10 mg/kf three times per day for three days and off 11 days. DMPS can be added for additional boosting of effect. Adding lipoic acid is thought to help remove mercury from the Central Nervous System. Vaccinations Contain Toxins Such as Aluminum, Formaldehyde, and Animal Viral Antibodies One source of heavy metals is thought to be the timerosol in vaccines which is associated with mercury. Although thimerosal was taken out of childhood vaccinations in 2002, autism rates continue to rise. One reason for this may be that infants are still exposed to thimerosal in flu shots. Most parents don't know that vaccinations today still contain such toxins as aluminum, formaldehyde, and animal viral antibodies. Many parents believe the multiple, wide-ranging vaccines given to children before they enter kindergarten play a role in: withdrawn behavior, lack of emotion, speech delay or absence, learning difficulties, attention deficit, focus, extreme sensitivity to sound and touch, repetitive movements, impairment in social interaction, and a delay in fine and gross motor skills. Detoxification is a long process and may take months. Liver enzymes and a CBC should be obtained - at first monthly, and then at regular intervals of 1-3 months to be sure that no toxicity from the DMSA is developing. Removal of Toxic Heavy Metals can Help Autistic Children Improve Their Social Skills Mercury, which can cause neurological disorders, sensory impairment, disturbed sensations and lack of coordination, is believed to be a cause of autism. Autistic children can take medications such as PCA-Rx for mercury poisoning. The removal of the toxic heavy metals from their systems can alleviate some symptoms and help autistic children improve their social skills. According to Donald W. Miller, MD, mercury's negative effects are significantly increased in the presence of aluminum and other neurotoxins. Also aluminum, as most people know, has been implicated in other brain and neurological disorders. Therefore, many doctors and scientists agree - the rise in brain abnormalities among children are likely caused by a relationship between genes and these environmental factors.
